Why do you date?

Another thread I made based around the ethics of dating someone platonically spurred me to ask this separate question.

It seems to me that some people view dating as a ritual that one has to go through before getting into the other persons pants.
(Think there's two subsets of this type. There's those who'd like to sustain a relationship with the person they're sleeping with. There's also those that will move on as soon as the other person gets too clingly. Dating just serves to appease the other person's needs)

Other people do it to get to know the people they like a bit better and decide who they'd like to go forward with, relationship wise.

Which are you? Are you perhaps a mixture of the two?

I also know there's other possibilities. Some people do it to stop others asking them out, others due to the social pressures of friends and others so they get some company at things as it can be awkward going alone to the cinema and restaurants. Also, no one wants to be a 3rd or 5th wheel.
