Why doesn't anyone else find the concept of marriage/weddings a teeny bit sexiest?

  • Thread Starter

I know I bang on about this every 5 minutes but I keep hearing that annoying song on the radio. Don't even know who it's by but it's the one that goes "I'm gonna marry her anyway". It just reiterates how ridiculously sexiest marriage is.

Among other things...

Asking the fathers permission
Taking the husbands name
Having father give daughter away
Wedding vows to honour and obey
Brides wearing virginal white
Only men making speeches
Only a woman wearing an engagement ring

Why do people take part in these archaic and patriarchal traditions so gleefully?! It's like saying 'I'm a sheep who can only live when I'm joined to a male'. I think marriage as a concept is fine, it's just weddings full of horrific traditions that are absolutely vile. Why can no one else see it? Pretty much every single women my age is practically planning her own wedding/is already married. It's so wrong.

Also. Inb4 some wiseguy says it's because I'm "bitter", "jealous" or because no one wants to marry me. Um. No. I've never wanted to be married, I'm in a happy long term relationship with no intention of marrying. I understand why people want to get married, I don't understand why they do it in such a way.
