boyfriends mum is overly controlling..wont let him go on a plane - he's 20!!!

I need to vent, and need some advice on how to deal with a tricky situation.

basically, my boyfriends mother is very controlling, its her way or the high way, my boyfriends opinion doesnt matter, and shes not controlling in the sense that shes looking out for him, its just what she decides goes. we're both 20 and he lives away from home at university which is where i live.

he went on holiday last summer with his family to france but had extremely sore ears on the way home so he was going to see into it because he was planning on going on holiday with me and my family. he has had surgery on his ears so theyre a bit more sensitive to pressure - but his doc said they could test whether these special ear plugs would work, but they seemed fairly positive that they would. the doctor didnt say there was any reason why he cant fly.

so anyway, my parents and his parents met at the weekend..and his mum randomly throws into the conversation on two occasions about how she made my boyfriend swear to her he'd never fly again, and about how he'd have a stroke if he ever took a flight and that his father would take the boat/train with him to wherever he wanted to go instead of flying(this would be a 14 hour boat to england, then a dozen trains..) ...shes delusional as she thinks it would take a few more hours, when really it would take a few more days..if you go away for 2 weeks, half the holiday would be spent travelling...

she brought it up to me on my own, then separately to my mum, and my mums response was 'is it really bad? we had offered for him to come away on holiday with us', his mum COMPLETELY ignored this, now even if he couldnt fly she could have atleast thanked her for the offer? she just continued on her rant about how itll be a very sad day when he chooses to fly..

how do i deal with this?! i feel like theres no real problem with his ears that cant be fixed its just her being controlling! like imagine sending his dad with him on the boat to go on holiday with me,or his friends! i would understand if he had tried every possible solution to having bad ears but i want to travel when i finish university and im not accepting the fact he cant fly until he is literally told no by the doctor.
