Boundaries: Holding Hands

  • Thread Starter

From a young age, holding hands was a means of security or comfort or care or support. You'd hold your mother's hand while crossing the road or in busy places so you don't get lost, you'd hold someone's hand if you or they are scared as a way to say "Don't worry, I'm here". Groups of friends used to walk around holding hands as a physical bond to show they're all together.

So why in our young adult lives does it now presume two people are in a relationship? Can friends not hold hands anymore? Does this seem to pass a boundary or have we become more distant and reserved that a prolonged physical contact (longer than a hug) is too intimate for a friendship?

I'd just like to hold hands more often, does anyone else share that sentiment?
