What do you think of "gender-neutral" language?

Recently there has been lots of buzz about changing things to be "gender-neutral", one being language.

For example, instead of patrolman it's patrolperson.

Instead of chairman it's chairperson.

Instead of mailman it's letter carrier.

Just to name a few examples.

Anyone else find this incredibly stupid? Do any women here honestly see it as a problem or get offended by having "man" in a title? Especially considering that, man BEGAN as a gender-neutral term for males and females.
