Why is my boyfriend so shy around my friends and family?

I've taken him to meet my family many times. My parents have taken us both out for dinner. My gran has taken us out for lunch. He's stayed over night many times. They're as welcoming to him as they can be. But yet, he's still so quiet and shy around them! I mean fair enough, you get nervous when you meet your partners parents the first couple of times, but its been a whole year now and he still barely says a word to them. And they've never been nasty to him or anything so its not like he doesn't like them or has any reason not to talk to them. It's getting a bit embarrassing. And its the same situation with my friends. I've taken him to meet my flatmates at uni many times, and still he barely utters a peep. My flatmates, too, are welcoming and friendly. But he seems nervous around both them and my family. It's strange, because he comes from a family of confident, loud and extroverted people. And when he's with his famil y and friends and even other strangers, he's not shy and talks away quite happily. Is there a reason for him not talking to my friends and family? They've not done anything to discourage him, as far as i'm aware. Neither have I, and I really want him to be part of my family
