Is this a breach of contract by my housing agent?

So i signed a contract for my house for my final year at Uni next year. I paid the summer retainer of about £300 pounds for July and August and the letting agent told me that id be able to put my stuff in for the summer. However during the final week, they told me that i wouldn't be able to as the house was being painted over the summer so that its ready for when i come back. this meant that i had to take all my stuff with me back home which sucked as i was hoping to leave some there, so that i don't have to drag it all back with me, come September. I've now paid £300 for a house that i can't use because its being "painted" and a little cheesed off as my mum keeps hassling me about it. Can my agent do that or can i ring them up later when the painting is done and move some stuff in the house? Help?
