He wont talk about his past

I have been in a relationship with a lovely man for 6 months; he has treated me amazing, is totally in love and we can both see a future together. Unfortunately, there is an issue that I cannot seem to get over. He wont talk to me about his past. He is 31 and I am 23. The age gap doesn't bother me at all but I am aware that he will have had ex girlfriends, been traveling, I know he was in the marines, but if I ask about any of these things I get one sentence answers. He doesn't want to share. I am a very open person and will willing share past experiences with him as I feel that is how we will really get to know and understand each other. He is moving into a house next month and as we were looking through furniture magazines I asked if he has ever lived with a girlfriend before. He replied "yes". I didn't push it because he obviously didn't feel the need to share but isn't it normal that I want to know who? why the split up? He has a tattoo of an ex girlfriends name but wont share any details. it's getting to the point now where I start to make things up in my head. If he just told me the truth about these girls then I can handle that, it's the not knowing that it making me feel like I don't know him at all. I can't live my life wondering about who he was. Is it normal to talk about these things?
