Girls like guys who don't give them attention?

So a girl I met in Uni, who came on to me, told me recently she does not like me. Bare in mind this is after many weeks of hours long texting, going out on a date, meeting up weekly etc etc. She even said she liked me at one point but still needed to know her feelings. I wanted to know for definite where I stood with her and she then told me she likes this other guy we both know because he has gotten distant from her and doesn't open up to her. :confused: Well it was getting a bit obvious to me before since she always talked about him, and never wanted to kiss/hug me once. So the question is, are most girls like this, and WHY? I was not clingy or a pushover or anything of the sort. Weeks in I just wanted her to know that I liked her and this happened. Sucks huh? Maybe because I opened up to her and gave her attention, she no longer got interested thinking I would be boring (who knows).......... many answers from both girls and dudes please.
