I mentioned previously a friend who was in a long term relationship, about a year, and had a weekend away planned with his GF. Then, his brother killed himself. He discarded the weekend away immediately and went up to be with his family. Rather than be upset about the weekend away, the GF took time off work, travelled up with him and helped look after the family. Shortly afterwards, he proposed to her and they are still, many years later, happily married.
The interesting thing is how differently men and women react to this story. Most men I tell it to consider her a remarkably kind woman and that he was a very lucky man. Most women consider it is nothing special and that surely almost every woman would do the same. In other words, we tend to have a far higher expectation of the sex we do not go out with. I am sure there is behavior from men that I would consider exceptionally bad and is actually common.
