A mantra of conservatives seems to be that government has too much control over our lives and that liberals want to give more control over to it.
But I also see where conservatives want government to control us. Or perhaps they want to control anyone who doesn't behave in a way they agree with.
A great example of this is the fact that there are so many people now who will just simply call the cops on neighborhood kids. If they see kids outside without parents, or kids skateboarding where it says not to, or kids shouting at someone's dog, that's considered worthy of calling the cops.
We now live in what amounts to a police state. At least in my neighborhood, which is completely suburban and safe and filled with kids, I no longer feel its ok to let my kids outside to play. And not because someone will kidnap them, but because some neighbor will call the cops on me for being a negligent parent.
I'm not making this up. Long gone are the days when kids were allowed to roam the neighborhood. I recently met a woman, very conservative, who told me she doesn't let her 12 year old go past the immediate block of their home when riding a bike. She also questions the parenting of the next door neighbors because "they let their son ride his bike all over the place!"
All of the fun and freedom of being a kid is gone now. And then we moan about the fact that kids are bored and just stay in and play video games.
It really makes me angry that I can't even let my kids out in my own neighborhood. And this is just one example of how people seem to LOVE to stand in judgement of other people's parenting. But getting the police involved is really going too far. We are giving up our freedoms by doing that, not the other way around. Why don't conservatives see that???
