Clueless husbandstill mesmerized by neighbors

I think I may have posted about my neighbors before, but here's a recap with my issue at the end. I have had problems with my neighbors, an older couple, for a couple of years. I never really cared for them because we don't have anything in common, but was distantly polite. My husband's parents are good friends with them (from visiting too long and needing to find something to occupy their time) and now come to my town solely to visit with these neighbors. My problem stemmed from an accident I caused, which was very minor. Being at fault, I fell all over myself apologizing. They knew I would pay to make it right, which I did (one inch scratch on their wheelcover which they managed to need $500 to fix). At the time of the accident they attacked me verbally in front of my daughter for nearly ten minutes, saying things that were not true, including that I've nearly hit everyone on the street and everyone always has to scramble to get out of my way, and generally treated my like a piece of ****. In front of my daughter. I live on a very short dead-end street and pass another driver on my street about three times a YEAR, so "nearly hitting EVERYONE" is totally nonsensical. Being at fault in the accident, I didn't say anything back. The neighbor man then took it upon himself to trim my front yard, and was astonished that I was upset by his actions. So he told my husband that he'd better keep his guns locked up because he (the neighbor) is afraid I'm going to shoot him in retaliation for what he did to the yard. This is the most fantastically ridiulous lie I could ever imagine. (My husband even jokes about how non-confrontational I am.) It caused the biggest fight my husband and I have ever had, because he defended the neighbor. He actually said the fact that I keep to myself and mind my own business makes the neighbor's perception of me as a dangerous person valid. Huh?? I have told my husband that I am no longer on speaking terms with them and to not talk to me about them. It's bad enough that his parents continue to vacation with them twice a year. My daughter needs three references for a job application, and right in front of me, my husband suggested she use the neighbor lady. Why in the hell would my daughter use a woman who slandered her mother as a reference? My daughter hasn't spoken to her in two years, and her last interaction with her was when she was badmouting me. How is it even possible for my husband to be that clueless? He really seems to not understand my probelm with the neighbors who slandered me and claim to think I'm dangerously insane, and will defend them over me EVERY TIME.
