Are "touchy feely" people a turn off?

I'm a girl, and whilst I'm fairly independent and not clingy, I've noticed that a lot of guys I date don't seem to like it when I'm touchy-feely with them. They don't mind when they initiate a kiss or hug or something, but seem a bit fazed if I put my arm around their waist or shoulders or ruffle their hair or something. I'm quite strong for my size and tend to have quite "dominant" body language around people without being pushy. I don't meant to intimidate guys, though, I'm just pretty physically affectionate. I tend to go for the "beta male" types as well.

I always dress and speak in a fairly feminine way, and I'm tiny, so I'm not sure if guys are just surprised that I'm the one initiating stuff because I seem quite girly and they assume it means I'm passive, or if they generally don't like their women to be "hands on." It's not like I'm always trying to seduce them/get them into bed, I'm not really good at saying sweet nothing so prefer to express myself physically instead. One guy I used to date was pretty stoic, and whenever I'd give him a hug or something I got the impression he didn't want it. Once I did it and he just gave me this really weird look - it was a bit depressing/confusing :S.

Advice? :)
