America needs serious gun control, and we need it now

For everyone on the left who kowtows to the NRA about not taking away people's guns, I'm going to do just the opposite. We need serious gun legislation, and we need it now.

Did you know that you are 300x more likely to die from a handgun in the safest medium sized city in America than you are to die by the same means in Great Britain? How about this: walking down the street in the safest major city in America is 300x more dangerous than walking any street in Britain.

We need serious gun control, and we need it NOW. Today. When we have 71 year old former police captains killing people in a theatre because of a perceived threat, we are lost as a nation.

The other thing we must do is stop "loving" our guns so much. It blinds us as a society to how dangerous they actually are. We are numb to it and instead cling to it.

Few people stop to think how much gun violence kids see before they are old enough to process it. Gun violence is rampant on TV, particularly scripted shows on major networks. Of the prime time shows on CBS, 58% include gun violence. Gun violence earns movies a PG-13 rating, not R. And violent video games are in a class all their own. We wouldn't dream of allowing teenagers to play video games that allow their avatars to have simulated sex, but simulated killing is fine.

Think about the message we are sending our young people, especially our boys. They shouldn't see sex on TV and they shouldn't be looking at porn online, but killing is fine. Seeing people shot isn't hurtful. Meanwhile, sex is off limits. Full frontal nudity automatically earns a movie an R, but only excessive gun violence would earn a movie an R.

If smoking is listed as a factor in the rating a movie receives, the DVD or Blue Ray disc often includes an anti-smoking PSA/commerical. Where's the comparable commercial for gun violence? Oh, that's right. The NRA would call that propoganda and cry 2nd Amendment foul.

What will it take for people to wake up?
