What happens when couples go to universities on other sides of the country?

I have a girlfriend who I like quite a lot and it seems this is probably what is going to happen. The idea of breaking up makes me sad, but on the other hand I don't know if I could deal with a long distance relationship.

Has anyone else had this issue before? And what happened? Thanks.. :)
