What does he mean when he says 'he doesn't date'

So I was supposed to go on a date with this guy that a friend introduced me to on a night out a while ago. Since then we've exchanged facebooks and have been chatting for a couple of weeks. We were supposed to go on a drinks date last night but 3 hours before we were supposed to meet up he pulled out, saying he had hay fever. Fair enough if that's the truth but i've got a feeling it might just be an excuse. Then after i'd replied saying it was fine and that we could do something some other time he goes to me 'so you know that I don't really date right?' Does he mean that he doesn't date people/ get into serious relationships Or is he saying he doesn't do this very often so he's quite nervous? Or something completely different? Oh and then at like 9ish last night he texts me saying 'i'm feeling better after a couple of drinks if i'm still up for going out' which I found a bit odd. I turned him down, didn't want to seem to eager/like i'd drop everything for him. Opinions please :)
