He wants to leave the door open?

My ex broke up with me last Monday, and has text me every day despite saying he wants space.

This was the last text he sent:
"I went to the gym that's why I didn't reply straight away ha yeah I understand what you're saying, I wanting to do is be friends like we are and see what happens, no time frame or anything on it, the one thing I don't wanna do is lead you on and commit to something that might or might not happen, I want to leave everything open for whatever happens, I'm not trying to have you on the sidelines or anything like that so plz dont think that, I haven't thought about what day to meet coz I've been really busy at work so I'm shattered as I always am haha but like i said we'll talk all about this when we meet up ok? I don't like trying to text it all it comes out wrong ha I know the way you're reading what I said and I'm not saying I'm not promising that "one day" so don't think that, give me a chance to think about when, i can't force you to have this app or not, it's up to you"

What does he mean by leaving everything open for whatever happens?

One minute he tells me we are going to be how we were when we first met, but how can that happen when we've been together for nearly a year?

He says I'm his best friend, but how can I be? How can we even be considered as being friends if he won't make the effort to contact me first, and he doesn't want to see me?

I've told him that I'm not going to make as much of an effort now, he has my number ect so it's his turn.

Will being friends get him back? Or will going completely no contact do that?
