I voted yesterday and was really disappointed. I'm truly an independent voter. I looked at each candidate's qualifications, their platform and their history and printed a ballot and marked my selections before I went in. There were men, women, black, white, rich, poor, democrat, republican and liberal among those I voted for.
I think more and more of America's younger generations (40 and under) are much more moderate than the previous two generates still voting and I find it very frustrating that all due to money, lobbying, etc. two people tend to take center stage. Last night there wasn't even COVERAGE of the third candidate. I looked at multiple news channels and even our newspaper (!) only had a headline that include D vs. R names.
I am fiscally conservative, socially liberal, concerned about the environment... I don't fit in a freaking Democrat or Republican box! And I don't want the Republican Old Boy Network candidate OR the Democratic Free Handout/Too much government candidate. Not to mention all I ever heard from the campaign ads was how awful the other candidate is, not what the candidate did/will do or anything about their platform.
I would be willing to concede to a cap on spending, each candidate having the exact same amount to spend on their campaign. Or even a sales tax of .25% that goes into a till that is evenly divided among those running with appropriate limits in place (i.e. only one candidate from each party, limit of 5 candidates, etc.) Some people have responded to my suggestion by saying if the part gets more money then that is a form of free speech; that obviously they garner more support. I disagree - I think there are a lot of people who WOULD support other candidates but those candidates can't afford TV advertisements. They aren't even asked to debate.
I'm tired of black and white thinking. I want the rainbow!
Am I alone in this thinking?
