Boyfriend wants to get engaged

I've been going out with my boyfriend for over 4 years now and we're as in love as ever. I'm 18 soon and he's 20. We've been discussing birthday present ideas for my 18th and his mam said an engagement ring maybe. I wasn't there at the time so don't know if she was joking or being serious. He knows I don't want to get engaged and respects that but he wants to show the world how much he loves me and that he's committed to me. My personal reasons for not wanting to get engaged is my age and the fact that I view engagement as a temporary stage before marriage and wouldn't want it to last more than a couple years and I certainly don't want to be married at 20! Those alternatives like promise rings aren't my thing at all so that's not much of an alternative. One day I will probably be engaged to him I just don't want it to be one day soon!
