Do prayers "really" get answered or....

.....is it just some good luck on your side when a negative situation turns into a positive one? And the reason I ask is because for all these years I have been aware of how horrible things are in Africa in many of the villages there, and the fact that thousands of those people are good christian people that probably PRAY all day and everyday, but yet for hundreds of years they still continue to endure poverty - disease - and death every single year. So it makes me wonder "does God just pick and choose which christians he wants to bless - hmmmm"; or is it just simply the fact that we are on our own down here for the most part and have to create our own blessings and answer our own prayers, and then hope that we're lucky enough for it all to work out in the end??
