Paying the price of achieving something - did things go your way?

  • Thread Starter

I did well for my degree (gained a First) which I worked my arse off. But looking back, I wished I had worked or gained some experience working in the industry whilst studying for my degree; I do know that that would be atrociously difficult but at least I can get "X working experience" on my resume which would help me to get a better (paying) job and "climb the ladder" faster. I was too focus on theory and lack the actual industrial experience, which I only gained the latter during my attachment year (which was during the final year). I also didn't bother looking at pay-scales or even salaries before. It took me a year to realised that I was severely underpaid, and of course I wasn't too happy about it.

I don't know really; a First probably did help me get the job that I want or probably did open some doors for me but after skimming through resumes, I actually don't give £0.2 if the candidate has a First unless he's a fresh graduate; the industries want experience and justifications if you want to get a job with them.

The title of the thread is generic but this is something relevant to me at the moment; but I believe it resonates with a lot of TSR users as well. Also, I think this thread is just venting on my part. So if you want to share your experience, please go ahead.

Any input or views are appreciated.
