Where are all the parties and why am I missing out?

So I'm in my second year at uni and I've been living at home since I started, so already that means I've missed out on a lot of the fun of living on halls. But while I accept that I can't change that until third year, I still don't know how to go about making new friendships that actually stick. I rarely get invited to halls/house parties and even though i want to go out more I don't know how to even find out where these parties are happening and how to get in, since most are either on halls or in student digs off campus. I feel like I'm missing out on a huge chunk of my social life, coz on a typical day I get the train to uni, do my work and then get the train back home because I don't know what else to do. There's a couple of student nights at the SU bars but I rarely meet anyone new. I want to be out at parties more and meeting new people but I don't know how. Thoughts?
