I've been friends with this guy for seven years - there was mutual attraction from the outset, but I was in a relationship. Since then, we have either both been in relationships (often friends with each others partners) or living abroad. Generally, the relationship has been platonic but a few things stand out:
- during a night out three years ago (when he had a girlfriend) there was a point when he took my hand and held it for a long time. Eventually, we rejoined the group, his girlfriend was there & it was never mentioned again.
- before he left to go abroad we became a lot closer, realised how much we would miss each other and hugs were several minutes long.
- he is often gushy about me to our friends in recent months, compliments me a lot etc.
- sometimes if we're in a room full of people, we lock eyes and it stays that away and feels really good :)
He asks me to hang out more often too but there are usually other friends there so hardly dates. But I saw him recently and as I approached this drunk bloke asked if I was his girlfriend, there was an awkward pause, we hugged and then he said "she's just a friend". Eek! And yet 10 minutes later I looked up and he was staring and smiling right at me. Is there any point in reading into this OR am I best to quit while I'm (not) ahead?
