How to end a relationship in a nice way?

My relationship with my GF has become a bit strained, since she told me her choice of university and I revealed mine, showing me how our lives are going in different directions, adding to the fact that at Oxford you get a insane amount of coursework, I won't be able to see her as much anyway. so I'm thinking of ending the relationship. I was thinking of sending her a message on facebook, explaining why I think we've drifted apart. Doing this on facebook means I can detail everything, plus it's quick so no one gets hurt? Is this a good way to break up, or is there a nicer way I can break up with her?
