Are we friends or more than that?

At sixth form there was a guy who sat in front of me in one of my classes, we didn't talk much except once when I was ranting to my friend next to me about a teacher and he overheard and turned around to join in my rant. About a month after that we found out that we applied to go to the same university to study the same course so I suggested that we meet up on one of our frees to work on some past papers together. Since then we've become friends, it turns out we have a lot in common and share a similar taste in music and films/TV.

We talk most days and he sometimes puts an 'x' on the end of his messages but he could just be used to ending a text that way. We've had a meal together and been to the cinema a couple of times. The last time we were at the cinema he was leaning in his chair towards my side for most of the film (which could just be because he was comfy sitting like that). We've also been out with some of my friends, during that time one of them got tipsy and spent most of the day saying things that made it incredibly obvious to him that I might like him.

My friends all think that we like each other and keep trying to get me to ask him out but I don't whether he likes me that way and whether I like him that way (I'm leaning slightly more towards I do like him). Also as results have not been posted yet, I don't know if we will both get into the same uni and if we do I don't know what would be better to have when starting, a friend or a boyfriend.

Sorry about the essay, any advice is appreciated :)
