Student thoughts on government

As the start of a new school year approaches, I overheard some high school students discussing classes and their ideas and questions about our government. I thought they had some interesting questions that could make for good discussion in the classroom. I'm not a political person myself, but I wondered how some adults who are more politically minded would respond to their questions. This is paraphrasing, but wondered how some of you would answer their questions:

Many people talk about "the Government" here in the U.S. as if it's them against all the normal citizens. This comes in many topics such as the environment, foreign policy, taxes, human rights, etc. It's always the government making ridiculous decisions that us normal people apparently wouldn't make.

So, when did this type of government start? Has it been this way from the beginning, or is there an era, incident, or leader that ushered in this type of government that a lot of people complain about?

People seem to dislike politicians, but politicians seem to be the only people who can win elections. Why can't a person who really wants to do what is best for the country and it's citizens forget that garbage and just be a normal person while campaigning. Who made the rule that you have to act like a politician? Are normal people not allowed to hold office? Why wouldn't the average voter go wild over someone who didn't seem like a typical politician?

We often act as if the government is a never changing being that is always against us, but I'm sure the actual people who make it up as a whole are different than were 15, 20, 25, etc., years ago. So, in that time, why have several people not come along and changed things for the better?

We have a Constitution, Judicial, Executive, and Legislative branches of government, but it almost seems like there is a secret guy who's really in charge and takes every newly elected Senator, Rep. and President somewhere and tells him how things are really going to be. If not, why can't all these people who go in with seemingly good intentions do things that the majority seem to like.
