SCOTUS Decisions

I know others here also enjoy picking apart SCOTUS cases. We recently talked about the "Abercrombie headscarf" case. This week two interesting decisions.

One, the court said the state of Texas can refuse to create a license plate for a group of its citizens. The case involved the "Sons of Confederate Veterans" who wanted the state to create a license plate for them. The plate included the Confederate battle flag. The state said creating the plate would be construed as "state speech" and would convey a message that the stated did not agree with. Judge Alito wrote the descent.

Two, a case where a church that erected temporary signs to direct people to different locations for services had run afoul of local sign ordinances that limited the length of time a temporary sign can be in place. They argued that their first amendment rights were being violated by the ordinance and the court agreed.

I found my self in the minority in both cases.

Admittedly, I'm leaving out a lot of legal foundational stuff and nuance of the arguments but I'll leave it to others to delve into that if they choose.

The big case we're all waiting for is the "ObamaCare" challenge. Stay tuned....
