Lawyer charging for no work..

Before the summer when my wife and I were working on immigration Visas, a fellow friend of mine has a girlfriend from the USA and she recommended to me an immigration lawyer and said she was very good, but also very caring and approachable.

So I rang this lawyer on my friends suggestion and spoke to her on the phone for probably 10 minutes. She agreed what we were doing was the best course of action (I had already researched) and that if we wanted, she could write a letter explaining our circumstance so that my then fiance could visit with no problems, as she was worried customs wouldn't allow her in.

I said thank you and I would discuss it with my wife. I then waited 3 weeks for her to send me a quote for writing this letter, which was well over £300. The fact she had not returned my calls, then forgot who I was when i finally got hold of her to chase her up about sending the above email, I was not impressed. I got the email a few days later and agreed with my partner that it wasn't worth it and we could do it ourselves.

This was in March. Today I get an email from her asking if we want to continue filing immigration papers through her (we don't) and if not to send her my address so she can close the account out, and send me £65 + tax bill(!!). Let me emphasize that I did not ask her for any help, and at no point during that initial 10 minute phone call did she say anything about it costing a consultation fee and therefore I consider it unfair and am not willing to pay it. The only communication i got from her since was when I rang her and she told me she would send the quote for 'the letter' to me by email, and then the email containing the quote. Before I tell her so I just wondered if that was the best thing to do? She did nothing for us, and like I say never said anything about any charges when I initially rang her (for the only time).

Cheers
