How does ons at clubs even work?

like...I don't know, I've never been and only go to small parties so I don't really know how it even happens. for instance, if you wanted to go home on a ONS, what the hell would you do with your friends? "sorry, not gonna go home with you anymore because i'm going with this complete stranger i've known for half an hour"? or do people go clubbing on their own to avoid said awkwardness? (I'm doubting this personally). what if you live quite far away; I know people go in big groups and might plan to taxi share, so if you just decided to go home with 1 person, what the hell would you do? If you went to someone else's home, how would you find your way back in the morning? do you have to plan on the spot how to get home, whose house to go to, how much money your gonna need for taxis etc? do people accept ONS requests on the basis on where you live? "i would sleep with you but i'm not going that far away sorry". I have no problem morally with it, but practically I'm very confused how it works. I guess it sort of fits together if your pissed out of your head though. Do feel kind of stupid about this but its something I can't really get my head round :$
