Either one or the other, rarely both

I keep noticing, or getting in the situation where a guy either is really talkative to me online/by text (flirty, chatty funny etc) and then, when it comes face-to-face, he's completely shut off and shy. This happens more often. But sometimes I have been in the situation where a guy I like, would be totally open and talkative and flirty when we're in public situations, even in front of his friends. However, coming to texting/messaging, he'll give the vibe that he doesn't really want to talk/is disinterested. I've rarely had a guy who I like be both; it either heavily lies on one of the sides. For me, I think it's better if the guy is outgoing when we're together, rather by text. But, there's times when I just want to have a conversation when I don't see him, and it's frustrating that we can't have the same relationship that we do face to face. In a perfect world there would be a delicate balance, but hey, we don't live in a perfect world. I've just noticed this a lot and find it quite weird. Anyone else noticed this? Have any advice?
