Best friends- short relationship- not talking

Ok so title basically says it all. Things between me and my best friend got quite serious a few months ago. He basically admitted to me how he felt after i told him to either admit how he feels or stop leading me on. We were together and happy for 2 months. NOthing caused us to break up. He just stopped talking to me for about a week and i got fed up and said if your having second thoughts about this you can just say. So he basically said he was having second thoughts and it was nothing to do with me, it just wasnt really what he wanted right now. I accepted that i knew his head was all over the place when it cme to me anyway. He then decided he didnt want to talk to me for a bit and to have a cler break as we had so much history as friends. So i agreed and after the set time we started talking again. We have been best friends for the best part of 4 years and now because of a stupid 2 month relationsip where nothingrelly happened i feel like ive lost my best friend. He does still talk to me but not like before . and i find when i get tired i get really emotiona and send him messages that i shouldnt which i think is pushing him even further away. I just want my friend back but he wont talk to me about the short relationship at all. Switches off if i mention anything to do with it. Hes never talked about it and i just think if we want to move forward as friends we need to get everything out of the way. Has anyone been through something similar? I dont want to be in a relationship with him anymore but i do want my friend back because 8 weeks together hsouldnt be enough to ruin a friendship that has been there for 4 years
