Been together 2 years and never met his family.

Me and my boyfriend have been together for 2 years now (both age 21) and I still haven't met any of his family. They know about me, but whenever they invite my boyfriend out to family events they tell him to bring me and he always finds an excuse as to why I, or both of us, can't attend. Two weeks ago his Nan invited us over for Sunday dinner and at the last minute he told me we couldn't go because his uncle had a row with his wife (they all live together) and he was upset. I later found messages on his phone where he'd texted his Nan telling her we weren't coming because he had work, so he lied to get out of us going. Then on Monday he was popping round his Nan's house again (she lives fairly local to us) to drop off a birthday gift, and she said on the phone for us two to come in and have a cup of tea and a chat because it'd be 'lovely to meet me'. However, my boyfriend ended up going without me by saying he was just running in and out to drop off the gift as she was busy. He was gone for about four hours and had lunch at hers so it definitely wasn't just dropping the gift off. :/ I understand his family are a little bit rough, but surely that can't be his reasoning... A few have been to prison and one or two do a lot of drugs but, I still don't understand why he won't introduce me to even his Nan? She seems like she wants to meet me. :( I've never even met his Mum or Dad. Granted they live about an hour away on the train but it'd still be nice to meet them. :/ Why does he want to hide me away so much? We've lived together for a year now and I just feel like he's embarrassed of me or something. :(
