Not in love with me

Hey everyone, My boyfriend of about a year recently told me he loved me from the bottom of his heart, but he was not "in love" with me and that he didn't want to be with me any more. We had been together unofficially as friends with benefits for about 2 years, during which he would always say the same thing as to why he did not want to make it official. Finally about a year ago he asked me to be his girlfriend and I was so happy. I was in love with him so much, and was so excited to finally start our relationship. During the three years we did everything together and were very happy, even when we weren't dating. He wanted to hang out with me everyday and we stayed at each other's place pretty much every night. I moved in with him after we became official and we had a very happy relationship. He was and still is my best friend, and I never had any indication that he was unhappy or that he was not "in love" with me. We would talk about our future together as a definite thing. We talke d about marriage, children, houses, etc and always told each other that we loved each other. It came out of no where that he said he wasn't in love with me and couldn't be with me. He says there is no one else, and I know he is telling the truth. I am just a little confused how he can want to spend so much time with me and love me, but not be in love with me. To me, true love is what we had, best friends that are also lovers, so his feelings are confusing to me. He said he was never in love with me, but just felt a like he should give our relationship a try after two years of friends with benefits and thought that the feelings would grow. What are your thoughts on this situation? I have never heard of a situation like this before, and no one else really knows what he is thinking as well. Is he just being lazy and not wanting to have to work at a real relationship and commit? He said he is not as attracted to me as he should be with someone he is in love with, but attr acted enough to have sex with me everyday. He is 27 and also has broken up with almost every other serious girlfriend he has ever had. I would greatly appreciate any and all thoughts and insight into the situation to help me feel less confused. Thanks in advance!
