How do you know if you found the right partner?

Hi,

It's been almost 2 years since my separation and about 7 months since my divorce was final.

Luckily I was able to push myself out of the grieving process with the help of friends and family. Once in a while I still have gloomy days in which I miss having a partner, not sure if I miss my exW or just having a life partner.

So my dilemma is the following:

I started dating and have met a few people I liked. I do feel that I'm very closed off emotionally. Usually when I meet someone I like we'll start dating, have lots of fun, but when I feel that the other person is expecting the relationship to get more serious I disengage immediately. I've actually been told by my dates that I don't let them love me(get close to me).

There was this one girl. We met about a year ago. I asked her out but she blew me off, well she stood me up 3 times in a row, so I shut that door. Recently she came around and we started going out. In a 2 month period we saw each other every weekend and we ended up being intimate. The thing is she said she wasn't into friends with benefits and that if we wanted to keep seeing each other we had to be in a serious relationship. I felt a little bit trapped and told her I wanted for us to know each other a little bit more. She basically said we knew each other enough and that being just friends would be pointless. So that friendship failed.

This last girl I really liked. The type of girl you feel a connection with. But that scares me now. That's what I felt with my exW when we met and eventually we ended up divorced. It's been 2 weeks since I last saw her and I'm feeling down. It's like I want to reach out and see her but when I realize I have to commit I start seeing all the red flags and uncertainty creeps in, so I've done my best to stay away.

So my questions are: Is it that I am closed off emotionally to any potential new partner? or Am I more critical of who I will share my emotions with because of the failure of my marriage? and for those of you that have more experience. Will I ever be able to love again and let myself be loved? How do you know when it's the right person(I thought my exW was)?

Thanks in advance.

Providence.

35 Year Marriage in a Vicious Cycle

I have also posted in the past in the Coping with Infidelity forum. I am married to a 3 time 'virtual' cheater, he's had two EAs with two OW in the past, the third time with the same OW. This ended a little over a year ago and we are reconciling, or trying to. He has done everything to prove to me he is no longer cheating and I see/feel no evidence of it now.

Our problems now are more this vicious cycle of conflict followed by rug-sweeping, but not by me, or not willingly anyway.

For example, this morning I tried to tell him about something that had happened last night that we didn't get to discuss as he was working late and I went to bed. This morning when I brought it up he would not let me talk. He kept telling me it didn't matter, it wasn't a problem, he knew what I was going to say. He literally would not let me talk. After trying to stay calm and several attempts to talk I got frustrated and ticked off, told him he was acting like a jerk and walked away to go do a workout.

After my workout and shower I went back downstairs to tell him it was not OK, what he had done. That people who care about each other don't act rude and condescending like that. He immediately turned it around and said "You do it all the time" I was just showing you what it's like, I was just kidding with you" etc. I told him I know I sometimes inadvertently interrupt him when I get excited or don't know he was pausing in a thought, but I had never done anything like that to him, literally talking over me and not letting me talk at all. He continued to now try to act like he was the injured party and then would not talk any more giving me the silent treatment.

This is the pattern. He has left now but will most likely come back and/or pretend nothing happened or make light of it and try and shift the blame back on me. Part of me is admittedly still upset with him about his cheating past but I do not throw it in his face at times like this, though I am sorely tempted. It would be a low blow, but really, he is trying to regain my trust and show me how much he cherishes me, and then he does this.

I try to stay calm but when he starts throwing it back at me I get perturbed and my voice rises and he tells me I am not right, I am just louder. I want to stop this vicious cycle as it gets us nowhere and then we let it go. He will not go to counselling as we tried it in the past and he felt "blamed" by the counselor. It seems that he is so insecure that he cannot admit when he is wrong, although I seem to do it all the time when I know it was my fault. Why can't he?

Is it just the way he is, or we are together? Is there anything I can do differently or is this normal couple arguing? It doesn't feel like it to me.

Recently had my first kiss-left feeling confused..help?

  • Thread Starter

I'm 19 and had my first kiss a few days ago with a male friend of mine that there has always been that vague 'something' with, that chemistry and he has admitted to liking me a lot since we met. I've always been nervous about this whole area as I haven't done it before and therefore have shied away from it with any guy in the past. But after having a drink(one drink that is) and watching a movie back at his,he hesitantly initiated a kiss and I responded and kissed back.We on and off kissed for the next hour or so after that,he guided me somewhat and reasured me as I embarrassedlly admitted I had no idea what I was doing(I was led to believe it was instinctive by friends..hmm)

But here comes the awkward bit.I got quite into it and it felt right (I didnt let myself think too much as I always overthink) and I ended up gently sucking his bottom lip and ended up kissing under his jaw and his neck which he seemed to like a lot and he did a bit back which I liked. After that we tried a little french kissing and I stopped then and felt that was a bit too much(and it felt really weird!) and a he said he wouldnt do anything I wasnt comfortable with and we ended up gong to sleep(I slept upstairs myself)

Did I go too far? Is that how first kisses go? Now we are trying to figure out where to go from here..and to be honest I am attracted to him but he isnt like any guy ive liked in the past or my ideal guy ..but there wasnt the whole 'fireworks' thing I've heard about from people.I did enjoy the kiss though..am I just being shallow?

How do I get to know him better?!

  • Thread Starter

I downloaded tinder out of curiosity a few days ago. I'm very picky, but have matched with roughly 70 guys so far. Out of these 70, quite a few have messaged but I don't really feel the urge to talk to them so I don't reply…I only really see it as a good time pass when I'm bored :/
However, one guy really stood out for me - he is from my hometown and I've stalked him on Facebook before (a long time ago) and remember thinking he was a bit of alright. He messaged me, and we maintained the conversation for like two days - my replies were always pretty slow and I probably seemed uninterested by the end of it as I was trying to act too laid back, and I guess we ran out of things to say to one another.
I am studying in the same city in which he works - we are both the same age but he has graduated and I have just started uni as a mature student. It's been a few days since we last spoke and I REALLY want to get to know him/ date him - I don't think I've ever been so obsessed with someone. I don't know if he would have just forgotten me by now, and I don't want to look like a creep by messaging him as he would then know he's been on my mind. Whereas if he were to message me right now I'd be ecstatic.
I guess I'm under confident and I feel he may be out of my league, but I would just like guys opinions on what I should do, and what can be made of this situation

Feeling like I am playing second fiddle to his family

I apologize if it's gonna be a bit long.

At Christmas he gave his mum and brother (who'll be 18 in October) money as well as to his nephew. Ok, nothing wrong there of course. He told me to get myself something, but then money was a bit tight so he told me to wait till the following month, but never ended up getting me anything. I always feel uncomfortable with using his money on me, so I wouldn't have bought myself anything anyway. He gave me a card that I had bought myself.
Previous Christmas I had only asked for a card, not even a present and he couldn't be bothered to send me one. I was away to help with family problems that Christmas and I sent him a card, and he made sure of telling me it looked cheap. I thought he was a real j*rk and I was really f*cked off and I was going through a cr@ppy period as well. Brother and mum got money of course for Christmas and for their birthdays.

He was given some vouchers ($100) as a reward for not going sick during the year. He gave them to his mum. This was in January.

The other day he must have spoken to his mum and she told him his brother wants to go on a carpentry course at college, but if he can't find a college close to where they live that offers it, he might do another course. Partner said he should do what he wants to do and said he can come and live here for a year to do the course round here. We live in a 1 bed place and don't have room, so he'd have to sleep on the sofa. He didn't ask me if this arrangement was ok for me (it might not be necessary for him to move here, but I checked and there don't seem to be courses available in brother's area). He merely informed me and I know that if I had said anything, he'd have gotten angry. He said brother would go back to his mum's whenever he's off college (and who's gonna pay for the expensive train fares? Partner of course) and he would be going out and so he wouldn't be at home a lot. Brother is quite lazy, I know that, as when he's been here visiting , he just played PS3 all day, wi thout ever offering to help. So, I am expected to cook for and clean after brother too? Partner said if it becomes too much for me, I can go back to my parents' for a little while.

He told his mum he'll give his brother money for an iPhone his brother is getting off a friend next month and next month there's my birthday too and I bet I'll get the "money is tight, can you wait till next month?".

Am I unreasonable in feeling like his family comes before me?

Doomed From the Start

Here's a breakdown of how we got to be married with a child.

My husband and I were high school classmates. We weren't friends, only cordial. He was in fact friends with my best friend, who 10 years later is still my best friend.

He would ask her for an introduction, asking if she would hook him and I up, but I always declined. He just wasn't my type.

A few years after high school, we ran into each other and talked briefly about what we were doing with our lives, again he wanted more than a friendship, and I declined.

A year after that point, we connected on Facebook. Again he wanted more that a friendship, but this time I actually took time to get to know him. After looking at how much he changed physically since high school, I was attracted. We lived 600 miles away so we began a long-distance relationship.

During that time we had a great connection. A bond that was strong even though we were not physically together, and after a few months we made plans that I would move to where he lived after I graduated with my degree, 4 months after that point. Keep in mind that we did not long distance date for long, 3 months maybe, so we were rushing. One day out of the blue he stopped answering my calls and emails. He wouldn't reply to my text or Facebook messages. About a week of me non-stop calling and worrying, he changed his Facebook status to "engaged" to another woman. I was heart-broken. He would not give me an explanation as to how this came about. The last
thing I knew, we were having a great time and making plans for the future. For him to up and dump me for another woman with no explanation, hurt me.

So I let it go.

It took a few months to get over the hurt but I moved on with my life. Cut off any possible ties with him; blocked him on Facebook, changed my number, deleted any traces of his email or phone number.

Fast-forward two years after this. I moved south and was in a completely different place in my life. I was living at a hotel in a new city, I had a good job, I had a new and amazing relationship with God, and I was overall happy. Though my living conditions were not ideal, I refused to give up and go back home after having a falling out with the family member I was suppose to roommate with did not want me there. I made the best out of my situation, and did not have a stress in the world. My relationship with God was the only thing I needed, and He kept me at peace, assuring me that things would work out fine.

I also had a male friend. Whom started out as just a friend. He was an awesome man I can talk to, who was also rooted in church. I felt like he was a friend I needed because its so easy to get distracted by what the world has to offer, and lose sight of God's path for you, and he helped he stay on track. Over time it turned into a mutual attraction. We never went past that point. I had some issues I needed to deal with, I came from a troubled past looking for love in all the wrong places. My
father wasn't there, my mother neglected her children to chase boyfriends, I was molested by my brother, and had way too many sex partners than I would like to admit. Sex was my issue. What this time in my life forced me to do was face my issue and deal with it. So there were times that my flesh wanted my friend, but he helped me to realize I'm worth more than what's between my legs. That made me want to be a better person, not for anyone else, but solely for me. It just took someone to show me. That's what attracted me to him.

In the course of turning over a new leaf, I unblocked everyone on Facebook. Not with the intent of re connection, but to let go of any negative feelings for anyone. I was at peace with myself and felt as if I had nothing to hide. Not long after, my ex reached out to me. He explained how he had been looking for me over the past two years (he would give my best friend messages which I would ignore) and how sorry he was for how he acted. He explained that we was told from a mutual friend that I was cheating on him (which wasn't true) which made him leave. I was upset because instead of talking to me first, he ran with it. We rekindled our friendship and of course he wanted a relationship. I had doubts about it, and people around me encouraged me to leave the past in the past. I can admit, my flesh took over cause all I could focus on was sex, and the brief bond we shared over calls, pictures, and emails. So I allowed him to come back into my life, only this time would be differe nt, he
would come to the state where I lived.

Still a lot of people didn't think this was the best to do, but I did it anyway. Once my male friend found out that I was getting back with my ex, I believe he was hurt, but accepted it. He still wanted to be friends, and even wanted to meet my ex. He never got angry or made me feel like I betrayed him. My ex gets here and the first night, we had sex. It was our first time being in the same space and romantically evolved at the same time.

Within 7 days, I knew I had made a mistake!

I had the overall feeling that this is not what God had planned for me. I took over and tried to make decisions on my own. I wasn't praying, and I was slipping back into old, bad habits (sex, cursing, etc) At the same time my ex came with more baggage than I was aware of. I knew he had two children with an ex, but I didn't know that he had never met the youngest who was 3 at that point. He drank beer everyday, rarely attended church, had poor hygiene, didn't like to keep a clean house, had an ex-girlfriend calling my phone being disrespectful, was emailing another ex-girlfriend about how their relationship ended badly, and was very insecure. He did not want me to remain friends with my male friend, he felt like everyone loved him and nobody wanted us together. I tried to reassure him that he was the one I choose, and I make my own choices, but it was never good enough.

I was not willing to accept all of his baggage. He is an emotional manipulator. I told him I didn't want to be with him and he threaten to kill himself, he said he took a bottle of pills and would "wait for death" silly me, I fell for it. I would explain my concern about an issue and he would always find a way to twist it and
make me feel guilty. He would try to make me seem crazy by saying one thing, than later swearing it was never said. I believed he played the victim card a lot, and I always looked like the villain.

After two weeks, I was done. I missed what I had before, I was convinced that God made it clear that I made a mistake, I was not willing to deal with the drama anymore. In two weeks he came and turned my world upside down, in the worst way, and I was done. We had the conversation, he didn't want to leave, but I explained he didn't have a choice.

THEN I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT!!!!!

I was literally on my way to work so I could buy his bus ticket online, and that little voice told me to stop at Rite Aid and get a pregnancy test. Both test were positive....

At this point everything changed for me. It was no longer about me, and I had a child to think about. I didn't want my child to grow up without a father like I did, so I told him about my pregnancy and asked him to stay. I felt like we needed to give this an honest try. I was excited about being a mother ( I love kids) and felt as if I had to make the best out of this bad situation. He had no job, and no family in this new city, so we were forced to keep living together. A few months later he asked
me to marry him, which I declined. I felt like we were in no shape to marry, and honestly, I didn't want to spend my life with someone like him. I went to visit my family back home and was kinda talked into marrying him. I come from a family of single mothers, so everyone felt that it was the best thing to do for our daughter.

Still in the mindset that I needed to make the best of this situation, I came back and married him. I felt that this life I never wanted was my punishment for stepping out on my own faith, instead of God's will. From the time he got here, I was never able to get back to that spiritually happy place. I was never able to forgive myself and seek God for forgiveness. I was never able to get back to that place, and I beat myself up about it everyday. That was 2 and a half years ago.

Fast-forward to the present. Our daughter is 2 and amazing. She is the best thing I've ever been blessed with. She is the light that keeps me moving.
My marriage on the other hand has not changed. The issues of emotional manipulation have not changed, they've gotten worst, taking a serious toll on my emotional health, we argue in front of our daughter, though I've never caught him cheating, he is was too friendly with females. He only makes female friends, and just like in the beginning, I could tell him that it makes me uncomfortable and he's find a way to make me guilty. There I many times where I feel a recorder or third person is needed at our arguments so they could witness how he try to make me out to be crazy. He'd say things and swear to life that they were never said. He'd never take responsibility for his actions, and his issues are always someone else's fault. Trying to talk to him is impossible. He'd twist it and completely miss my point. Anytime
I would disagree with him, it was a big issue. It could be something minor such as what to make for dinner. Putting on the happy face was completely exhausting. I did not trust him, I had no desire to be married to him, and I felt emotionally abused. He does not respect my feelings and everything has to go his way. He would make himself out to be the worst person in the world, using my guilt against me. He'd also use sex against me. I could never initiate with him, he'd always turn me down, saying my approach is too aggressive. No matter how much I changed, or toned it down, we would only have sex when he wanted to. Coming from a sexual past, that did a big number on my self esteem. Just like with every other issue I have in the marriage, my approach is never good enough. No matter how much I try to tweak it, say it different, write it, hint it, there is no way to get him to understand my point. It will ALWAYS turn to him being a victim.I'm in a marriage that I didn't want to be in to begin with. I got married because I felt like I had to for our child. I've tried over the past three years to forgive myself and try to be happy in the marriage, but the truth is I can't forgive myself because I'm not happy. Everyday I suffer to live in a life that I'm not happy with. To make matters worst, is he knows this! Starting at 4-6 months into our marriage I told him that this isn't what I wanted. He would make nice for a few months, have sex with me, and I'd fall into the trap again. It would only last a few months then I'd be back to feeling the same way, for two reasons. 1) he'd make me feel guilty about wanting to leave him 2) I feel that we will use our daughter against me. He has two sons with an ex, and one of them he has never met to this day. Partially at his fault, and some at hers. I think he feels like I will take our daughter from him (with my past I could never) He makes me feel like I have to stay married for her. He knows that if I had not got pregnant, we would not be together at all.

At this point I am drained. I've lost myself over the past three years. I'm only 26 and feel as if I've wasted so much time. I've tried asking for counseling, going to church together, praying together to we can get to a healthy space. But he only jumps on the band wagon when I reach my breaking point. I don't believe his actions are sincere. He does these things temporarily to get me back in his good graces then its back to emotional drama. We had this discussion several times since we've been together, and I feel like we need time apart. He refuses to let go. I'm tired of the back and forth, I simply don't want to be with him. I never have. I'm tired of living this lie. He says that I won't be happy with him because I won't let the past go, but he fails to realize is I can't. I've tried. My heart won't let me forgive myself. I love my child more than life, but I don't believe she was brought here to bring us together. Marriage should be two people who want to be together f orever, not one person feeling like they have to be marriage for a child.

I've forgiven my parents, and my brother. I hold on to nothing from my past, expect this. It has a hold on me.

I've learned so much about myself in the last three years, and I thank him for bringing the lessons and our daughter into my life. All I'm asking for is space and time, and he will not give me either.

Husband says we are like brother and sister

I have been reading through many posts, trying to locate situations similar to mine--but i am not having any luck. Is there an easier way to search for these? My situation does not involve affairs/alcohol or abuse.

We have been married for 13 years, have grown apart for many years, lack communication skills and lacked the knowledge needed to bring us closer together. My husband announced a few weeks ago that he wants to sell everything, move out by himself, get a divorce and live by himself.
He stated we have been living our life confortably with each other, like brother and sister, no connection, and feels there is no chance of fixing this. I also make more $ that he does, and claims that he doesnt want me to be his crutch anymore.
I feel that he is under alot of stress with his work. I love him very much an only want us to be able to straighten this out so that we can enjoy and support each other.

He has become cold to me, we dont talk to each other at all. he works until 8:30 at night (on our property) comes in the house and puts earphones on and listens to music - tuning me out.
I have checked phone records, his computer, he is here all of the time (so am i), i do not see how its possible that he could be having an affair.

I am not crying, not begging. We are just not discussing anything and not doing any communication or having any interractions. It is terrible. I cant wait to get out and do something this weekend.

Does it make sense that he is acting this way for the issues he is complaining about?

Where can i find posts similar to mine? Many relate to affairs/drinking etc, which none apply here.

How many relationships did you have before settling down?

  • Thread Starter

I'm aware that not many people on the student room will have 'settled down' as we're not all at that life stage yet, but I know there are some of you out there.

So, how many serious relationships did you experience before finding the right person? How did you know they were right and that the other people weren't?

I'm only 19 but I've had the same one and only boyfriend for two years, wondering if he'll be the one I end up with or not. Would be cool to hear others' experiences

Confused sexuality please help

  • Thread Starter

Hey there,

For the last five years I have been in a lesbian relationship, we got engaged but she left me a few months ago and I was devastated. Recently I have felt like it's time to start dating again, but I'm nervous because I was in a relationship for such a long time and it really was my first and only serious relationship. In addition to this, im starting to question my sexuality a lot and am considering going on a few dates with guys to see how it would go. I could just use some general advice on starting again after such a long relationship and also any advice from anyone who is gay/questioning how they feel or is bisexual. I'd really appreciate any feedback at all.

Online dating

  • Thread Starter

I'm surprised I couldn't find a thread about this before. Has anyone tried it before? How did it go for you? I tried and failed because of my shyness I couldn't actually go through with meeting anyone. I still go on there sometimes with the hope I will have the courage but I never do. I wish I could pick girls up in real life but I never can I know a lot of people that have no problem with this and can get a girls number after a bit of small talk. So I thought online dating would be the easy answer but obviously not. What are your experiences from this?

Am I wrong for not wanting to be friends anymore?

  • Thread Starter

So I've been friends with a Muslim girl for over a year now. We hit it off really well and I thought she was awesome and really attractive. Fast forward a year and I'm really into her, we know a lot about each other, talk all the time etc... Should have seen this coming but it didn't even cross my mind, so I ask her out and she said "No" because of her religion and that her family will decide who she marries. This angered me to no end and I figured it's best to just cut ties as it would be pretty ****ty to carry on being friends with someone you really like but can't be with, then eventually watch them be with another dude of the same race. I told her this and she flipped ****, "selfish", "insensitive" blah blah... who's in the wrong? me or her?

Something that really annoys me. Especially when it's a text that invokes some kind of response, fair enough if it's something which doesn't lead to a reply but when you've typed an articulated response/essay text and somebody says k to you it immensely pisses me off. Is it just me?

We like each other but our dates keep getting rearranged?! What would you do?

  • Thread Starter

So, slightly strange situation. We know each other from uni, really like the guy. He asked me out on a date last term, which I had to postpone, and then he had to rearrange the next one. So we never actually had the date. Then it was the Easter holidays, and we live fairly close to uni so were going to meet up anyway, but I then unexpectedly got quite ill and was in hospital for a while.

I've recently got back on my feet and I asked him if he was still up for it, he said yes but then that he's been ill too recently, so it'd have to be when he's feeling a bit better.

This is all over the course of a month or so, we were also chatting quite a lot at first but it's all sort of petered out over the two weeks and we haven't talked very much at all compared to at first, so I feel a bit awkward asking again, but at the same time I do really want to go on a date with him...

what would you do? Wait for him to ask, or ask again in a few days if he's any better/to rearrange date?

If your partner screwed up and affects your life negatively, what would you do?

  • Thread Starter

I'd assume most people won't control their partner out of respect for them as a person, but what if the decision of your partner impacts your life negatively?

One example I could think of is assuming that you have a child together and your partner insisted doing X, Y and Z to the child, something you strongly rejected but was ignored at the end, and the result is that it messed up the child.

X, Y and Z can be anything; not sending the child for extra tuition, medical attention, etc.

Would you be resentful to your partner? What would you do?
