How do you become an "alpha"?

Do you think they're born or made? I've always been curious about stuff like the concept of "natural leadership" and so on. If you have always had a strong personality, how can you tell if you actually are a good leader or just a bit of an arrogant dick? What makes someone an "alpha?" Is the concept flawed?
