Can't tell if I'm just desperate?

Anon or delete please as there's people I know on here... I'll try to keep it short and sweet, bullet pointed in fact. - There's a lad who lived in halls with me who looks 15 and is basically anorexic - We got on well - He's liked me/probably still does a lot - I've told him I don't like him back multiple times - Now it's the holidays I think I might like him - He's planning on asking out a lass from his course after the summer but before the summer started and he was interested in this lass, it was clear from not only my point but from others that he still liked me - Everyone but him knows this lass doesn't want to go out with him after summer, she's lied to him and said that because it would be a long-distance relationship she doesn't want to go out with him until they return to uni; leading him on :( The point; I don't know if I like him because he showed an interest in me which is really rare combined with the fact I haven't 'had any' in a while OR whether it's genuine. Fact is, I don't want to mess him around like I already have done (by saying I don't like him while at the same time I've probably been a bit too flirty). There's also the thing of in September a lot of new people are joining my course, so I wouldn't want to 'put myself off the market' to find there's someone I properly like. I just want to see if anyone's been in a similar situation or has any advice? Thanks guys, I've been really confused these past few weeks.
