Why is he doing this?

OK, there'a guy I'm good friends with; we spent lots of time together over the past few weeks, but just as friends; I've got a great boyfriend and have no intention of leaving him for anyone. Just before I went home from uni, it became apparent that this guy (although he does have a girlfriend) is interested in being more than friends with me. I've not encouraged this in any way and have been very clear in my intentions, but since he never says anything explicitly, I couldn't give him an explicit "NO" either. Anyway, since coming back home from uni, he's been really weird; he doesn't text me for days and then sends lots of really lovely, heartfelt texts, then stops texting me again. Why is he doing this? I value him as a friend, but I don't like playing games and I find it very hard work when I don't know if he wants to continue the friendship or not.
