How long is too long before 'R' attempt?

Example: Wife starts an affair in January...weeks later husband find out, they agree mutual separation, husband doesn't do an awful lot about except move out the house and occasionally comes back to see his child. 8 months roll on...nothing really pro-active happens, wife is still seeing OM (but less and less), husband feels a 'R' is on the cards but is still undecided unless wife goes into 'NC' mode with OM...but no long-term plans are made either way. Has too much time passed or can reconciliations be made after an even longer period of time?
