Just wonder..... to what extent is it necessary to have similar social groups as your bf/gf?
Also how does one get through this minefield when people in it isn't exactly your forte when it comes to the type of people you'd like to socialize with.
Reason am asking is got into a somewhat new relationship and she is asking me to join her and participate in some of her social groups. She said she will make an effort to join some of mine but claimed I should try not to be in those groups so often.

Spoiler:
Most of my social groups tend to involve those of UK, US, Australia, NZ or people from Asia as we get together and we create our "Little UK" or "Little Singapore" as we miss how things are at home, it is generally quite difficult to bring anyone from here into those groups as there would be lots of those awkward moments where we say something bad about this place and it could offend. My ex despised these groups as she thought they were a bad influence while my gf thinks these are exactly the kind of groups that should be banned as she thinks it's the reason why in the back of my head I'm always thinking of leaving or moving.
I also have some social groups that involve cars and sports, most are just a bunch of old men discussing how best to piss off their next trove of money and mostly harmless as we mostly only talk about old Volvos as well as how and where to find their parts for cheap.
She does have a few social circles that I wouldn't ever dream on being anywhere close to, my ex had quite similar social groups but due to it being in Sweden and us not living there meant I escaped needing to be involved in any of those groups and could mostly laugh at it as in UK or Singapore such groups would have been considered extreme. Now obviously I can't quite escape it as easily and simply will have to deal with it.
She does have some usual social circles that has some nice ones about that I can relate to and get along with but there are a few that it'd be me walking straight into a lion's den, think along the lines of :-
SV or Socialist Left political party, I really can't tolerate these bunch and I don't even like my car to have SV on the registration plate so I registered it elsewhere, she is quite active here.
Then there are the environmentalist groups, they tend to be fine until they find out I work for an O&G company, some will make some snide remarks about how it is companies like this that are destroying the planet, then when we start discussing one charity project that I'm trying to fund instead of helping they would start snipping or sabotaging it, I just feel powerless to fire back at them though I suppose I could use some rather fancy English words to get back at them.
Then there is this feminist group, it is more of a women's empowerment group. I'm fully supportive of the work this group does, they are not extremist but there are a couple of extreme ones here that has a loudmouth. I do give to them just not openly and always by proxy, so it is always deemed by the extremist that I'm against them. The last 2 times I was here I mostly just kept quiet or found a corner to sit with my iPad pretending to do some work though was mostly reading Daily Mail for entertainment.
