Exhausted in evening.

Problem one is that I just don't sleep well on a regular basis. Maybe every third night I sleep enough to feel refreshed in morning. I don't want medication. I have tried some meditation and do get some benefit from it if I remember to work through what I was tought to do to relax.
When I sit down in the evening to read paper or a book or work on a hobby I find my mind is shot. I can't concentrate. Seems to get worse with age. I'm mid 40's. I can remember pulling all nighters to study. Don't think I could any more.
My work is stressful and that is a factor and nights I have kids they involve driving to multiple locations, cooking, cleaning up and usually a load of laundry. Kidless days are easier.
Any thoughts? Anybody else find they just can't keep the pac ether want to?
