Can you talk politics without its getting personal?

I have a friend who is nearly 80, and she told me that when she was young, she and her friends would have political arguments all the time, but no one took it personally. Even in the 70s and 80s, when I was growing up, I don't remember people getting into big arguments and separating socially based on their political convictions.

Things certainly seem to have changed. Why do you think so, and when did you start to notice it?
