confront behavior from 1 year ago for recurring company picnic?

Every year, our company has a "company picnic" and it is huge...more like a carnival/county fair......all fried food/lobsters/hot dogs/hamburgers, rides, etc...you know what I mean..it's FUN..

well last year, my husband was in a crabby mood...picking fights, picking me apart and just plain MISERABLE to be around...then when we went home, he screamed at me for allowing my child to walk up the stairs with me in front of him instead of behind him. Upon the advice of my therapist, I said, "I need a kinder tone out of your mouth"...
He said he "accepted that"...but didn't want his son "in jeapordy" and then told me he was "upset" he didn't get to play tennis that day...(he normally plays weekend mornings at 9 or 10 am....but with the commute to the picnic an hour away, he had to "forego" it in the morning at least and was MAD).

How do I ensure that this behavior does NOT happen again? I already asked if he wanted to go and he said, "yes"...

BUt I don't want him going and acting miserable and, as you know, "walking on eggshells" for when he blows up again.

Should I ask if he wants to play tennis in the afternoon? Or very early in the am? (our son will last a few hours but will be crabby if we take him around 12 pm to this), ie, it's in his best interests to go early.....I just don't want a miserable husband again!!!
