Should I tell him?

Basically I'm a second year student at uni living in a house of three - two girls one boy. I'm best friends with the boy (I lived with him last year as well) but secretly I kind of like him as more than a friend. We're properly best friends and neither of us ever really do anything without the other. Neither of us has been with anyone else since the start of uni. I would just tell him but if he then fell out with me I literally don't know what I'd do as I basically spend all of my time just me and him. I really can't tell what he thinks of me. Sometimes he's really really nice: makes me laugh, sings to me, takes me out for dinner etc but sometimes he can be quite moody with me and say that I'm annoying. I know it seems weird for him to call his friend annoying but he's just kind of like that. He's also not the touchy feely type at all - he hates people hugging him so I can't try anything like that. I just really don't know what to do.....help?
