Why do people go back to their exes?

I don't understand why people go back to their exes, they're an ex for a reason...

Would you go back to eating a dish when it made you sick? Just becuase you liked eating the dish of you loved the dish it doesn't mean you should go back and eat it again, how do you know it won't make you sick again?
