Nosy best friend making things awkward for no reason

  • Thread Starter

So I have this close friend (who is a girl, we're just going to call her A for now) who I spend a fair amount of time with, she's in my circle of friends and I know some of her other friends as well. Hadn't seen each other for a while because of the summer break, but yesterday a bunch of us had gone to the bar to meet up and out of nowhere, her best friend (B) suddenly turned to me and claimed I liked A and 'fancied my chances'. Obviously, I denied it on the basis it wasn't true, I've no idea why the idea even came into her head to begin with, but I knew she (B) was going to go 'grass me up' to A almost the second they left. She did. Obviously. Now things are unnecessarily awkward because she sent me some long text saying she had a boyfriend etc etc. First of all, why? Second of all, it turns out A had lied to me, as she was moaning about B earlier in the day and had said that she'd fed her some lie about two men fighting over her or some crap, but obviously that itself was a lie. Why? Did she think I wouldn't hang out with her if she wasn't single?

I'm not really sure how I go about clearing things up because it's not only awkward, but I'm annoyed that A outright lied to me for several weeks for no reason whatsoever, when it was totally unnecessary. I understood her wanting to keep her relationship quiet - why not just say nothing then, rather than tell some cock and bull story? I wouldn't even care, apart from the fact that it's going to be difficult to avoid her entirely, so I somehow need to set things straight.
