I don't think this problem fits under any other sub forum here on TAM, so I am going to post it here.
My husband and I live in an apartment building with 4 apartments per floor. For a few months about 2 years ago, we had drug dealers living next to us. You can imagine how relieved we were to have a mid 20's film student from Turkey move into the apartment next to us. He is quiet, keeps to himself, is very polite, an all around great neighbor to have, with the exception of one minor problem.
He stinks.
He stinks so bad, I cannot ride the elevator with him anymore. My husband and I took the elevator down with him the other day (we live on the 9th floor) and by the time we got outside, into the fresh air, and were around the corner, I was gagging so hard I thought I would vomit. Now, if I see him in the lobby or in our hallway, I will take the stairs up or down, regardless if I am boggled down with grocery bags. While this problem is good for my ass and legs, I feel quite bad for the guy.
Every time I see him, he seems really sad. I am pretty good at reading people, and I can definitely see sadness in his eyes. I am willing to guess he is sad because people are probably not very friendly or chatty with him because he stinks.
His odor is a result of him not washing his clothes or showering on a regular basis. He even admitted to my husband that he "does not do laundry often because he does not want people to see him washing his clothes".
The weather is getting warmer here, and this problem will only get worse. Sometimes his odor stinks up the whole 9th floor.
I genuinely feel bad for him, and I want to do something to help, but I don't think I have the nads to talk to him in person.
Would it be out of line to write a nice, anonymous, and very, very kind note and slip it in his mailbox? Or should we just ignore the issue and continue to take the stairs?
What would you do?
**My husband and I were lounging in bed last night, talking about this, and I said "Hey, I'll post about this on TAM and see what people say! There are tons of wise, very smart people on TAM and I am sure we'll get some good feedback".
So thank you in advance, you wonderful and wise TAM folk, for all of your feedback and much appreciated advice.
