How to tell this girl that i like her?

There's this girl in one of my lessons at college(both 17) who i really like, she has never had a boyfriend and is the sort of girls that's a little shy and cagey about everything really people describe her as 'up herself' but i really can't see how they think that, she's not like that in the slightest. I must admit she does my head in but i really like her and i have no idea what to do. Do i ask her on a date? How? When? I haven't been on a date/asked a girl for a year :/
