My 13-year-old son and I adopted a 7-week-old rescue puppy last week. She is a shepherd/lab (on her Mom's side) and Boxer mix. Adorable (she looks like a little Puggle right now) and very sweet. But I'd sort of forgotten how challenging it can be to care for such a young puppy.
She's done very well adjusting from being taken away from her litter mates and Mama just days ago. House training is going reasonably well. She sleeps on my bed with me, and hasn't had any accidents up there, and sleeps for six or seven hours at a time before she needs a potty break.
Everything's really pretty great with her, except for the biting and chewing. She has all kinds of safe chew toys, and we encourage her to use them and play with them with her, but she bites and gnaws on our hands and feet and ears at every opportunity. We grab her gently by the scruff of her neck and give her a firm "No" when she does it, but it doesn't really dissuade her.
Also, it breaks my heart to leave her. I work in an office five minutes away and have an hour for lunch, so I never leave her longer than 3-4 hours (DS goes to camp all day every day), but she just howls in her crate when I leave.
Anyone have some good puppy training/care tips? Or stories?
Her name is Buttercup, by the way.
