Hi TSR! Sorry in advance for this being long. I'm really angry and ranting a bit. :$
So my best friend's wife is a Chinese girl in her 20s, he's a middle aged British guy. They hooked up in China just before she came to the UK to study; she then insisted on marrying even though he was happy as they were, but she would have left if he didn't. They lived together for a while with him footing all the bills. Not long after, she left him but remains married. The very week she gets her British passport, she tells him she wants a divorce but says he won't have to pay anything, she'll bear the cost as it's her that wants it. (He's thousands in debt so he just doesn't have the money.)
His copy of the papers came through this week. She was hassling him to sign instantly but he put her off and brought them to me to check. Turns out she's asked the court to order him to pay for the application and also to create a financial order. She has lied her arse off about how she supported him throughout the marriage, so I'm worried this would not come out in his favour. He called her about it last night, she gave him a load of abuse and said she never promised he wouldn't have to pay anything.
OK TSR, here's my problem:
Basically, if she refuses to withdraw/amend the current petition, how screwed is he? Is there anything he can do apart from going through a messy, expensive court process?
Thank guys :)

OK TSR, here's my problem:
- He totally refuses to believe she's done anything manipulative, and thinks it's a misunderstanding. (I think she's been ****ing him over from day one. Opinions welcome, if the majority think I'm wrong I'll gladly stand down on that.)
- Because of this, he thinks she will (as she promised earlier) give him the money for the application fee (£450ish) if he's ordered to pay it, and that she will explain to the legal system somehow that she doesn't really want a financial order. I have explained that the judge will only care what she put on the paper, and she is under no obligation to honour her promise. However, she is telling him it'll all be fine and she'll sort it later if an order is made. I've explained this is not usually possible but he thinks she's a sweet little doe-eyed thing and believes every word she says.
- If he wants to contest her version of events/demands re. money, he needs to complete the form tomorrow and send it off, or her version is the one that goes ahead. (However this costs a lot of money so it's really not a good option.)
