Hot and cold behaviour from ex boyfriend??

He broke up with 4 months ago now(due to feelings now being what they was) and he was my first bf and of course we used to be really close and got on loads before we got together.
I personally took the first 2 and half months a bit hard to get over and to move on due to not understanding and still having feelings for him. (i still care about him as a friend)
But..I've now moved on in the way of us two never being together again, nor close friends again.
we are friends and keeping the door open to each other (e.g contact etc..) as theres no problems between us. as i know of. (our own decision before anyone disagree's!)

last weekend he spoke to me asking me how i am and that he really likes all my new drawings i've recently been posting and he said he is glad im getting on with myself, doing well, and that he will come over sometime, when free.
i was pretty shocked with the stuff he said and that he actually spoke to me for almost 2 hours (which if honest has been the longest he's spoken since we broke up)
which in a way felt weird, but it was also nice to catch up again.
He has also been speaking to me for most of this week and has been actually alright, i also saw him yesterday, and he hugged me and was asking general stuff (dont know if its because my mum was there)

but that afternoon, i replied to a message he sent that morning and also i asked a question, but he came across as if he couldnt be asked to talk to me, [maybe because he was over at a friends house with a couple uni friends] who one is my friend too... but it seems like when he's with them he changes and when hes not or with just one friend, hes nice and actually seems interested in talking.

why would he be nice to me for most of the week, then suddenly seems un-intrested the next when with his friends?
(he hasnt been cold with me in ages if im honest, but it seems like he does it when with his friends...)
